Sama Basic School (also known as Shree Gauri Shankar Basic School) was established through the collective efforts of Sama’s local residents. Nestled along the remote border between Nepal and Tibet, the village remains underdeveloped, lacking even basic motorable roads. Reaching this isolated settlement requires an arduous seven-day trek from the nearest town.
 

Due to the harsh climate, villagers can cultivate only two crops—barley and potatoes—which sustain them for six months. Feeding children is a significant challenge, as most food must be imported from lower valleys at exorbitant costs. For instance, while a sack of rice costs US$ 15 in the nearest city or market from village, its price soars to US$50 in Sama, with the majority of the expense attributed to porter or mule transportation.

With meager incomes, parents struggle to afford even basic necessities. Sending children to Kathmandu or other cities for education is financially impossible, as families lack both the means and relatives to accommodate students during vacations. Providing free, quality education within the village is the most viable solution, offering a lifeline to the community. Such an initiative would have a profound impact, addressing pressing societal issues like early marriage, poverty, and systemic deprivation.
